INAUGRAL ACTers AWARD

At the Mosaic Master Class, Jennifer Wright (Summers) presented the inaugral award to Dana McCown for service to Art Council Toowoomba in numerous areas, over a number of years. Dana was thrilled with her trophy which was created by the committee, each adding to the completed figurine. She has lovingly named it Indigo Gal.

MOSAIC MASTER CLASS

The workshop, led by multi-skilled artist Scott Maxwell, increased knowledge for concept development that will enable the Toowoomba community to deliver the mosaic Flood Marker Project, Splashing back.

For both experienced and novice mosaic artists in our community this workshop took knowledge and skills of participants to a new level both in terms of mosaic art, public art in general and developing professional practice and presenting project proposals and using new media to promote themselves.

In addition to giving advice on the concept design suitable for mosaic public art, the tutor worked with individual participants to enhance their composition and improve their skills.

The workshops built relationships between members and a group of people who are committed to working on mosaics together. ACT gained new enthusiasm and the sharing of flood stories of participants illustrated just how powerful visual art can be in overcoming trauma and focussing on the positive that comes from coming together as a community.

ARTISTS STORY – JENNIFER WRIGHT (SUMMERS)

As Toowoomba feels the pressure of the shift from rural to regional, an artist envisages how development could engage people, build social capital and tell the stories of place in more aesthetic ways.

Thanks to ABC Open Southern Queensland, Penny Cowell, Mary-Kate Khoo and Jennifer Wright (Summers) came together to plan a documentary to demonstrate the move from rural to regional Southern Queensland.

After studying various examples of documentaries, the group gathered ideas about characters and how they could go about the task of producing a video documentary about a character who epitomised the rural to regional (Toowoomba) shift.
